We’ve all seen the pictures, the beautiful beaches, powder white sands and crystal clear water as far as the eye can see; the Maldives islands are known for their paradise resorts and luxurious settings, but it’s also the home to an abundance of marine life and species of fish; making it perfect for fishing! Fishing is an integral part of Maldivian livelihood. Apart from its contribution to the country’s economy, it is also a favourite recreation, not only for locals but for tourists as well.
Fishing enthusiasts will find plenty of opportunities around the Maldives, Island tours can be arranged through various registered fishing guides or resorts, like the Adaaran Club Rannalhi. You may be wondering, why go through all the hassle of organising guides when I can just fish from my resort’s reef? The reason is, the Maldives have very strict fishing regulations and fishing is not allowed on reserves. In addition, most resorts protect their reefs by establishing a status of ‘reserve’ in order to protect it, so no shore fishing is allowed there. Fishing off the larger inhabited islands are allowed though.
The most commonly seen fish around the islands are tuna, groupers, squirrelfish, barracuda, trevally, rainbow runner and many more, but taking into consideration the immense biodiversity found here, you never know what you might catch. There are several choices for fishing expeditions; there’s shore fishing which includes live bait, fly fishing or beach casting, the more popular sport fishing known as jigging, bottom fishing and for the more adventurous, big game fishing. Night fishing is also an alternative if you want a quieter and secluded experience. The marine life in these warm waters is considered to be very strong, no matter what the size, so be prepared for a fight once you’ve snared your fish.
