While some people dismiss Maldives as a simple beach destination, nothing could be further from the truth. Although it is true that the country has some of the most amazing beaches in the world and that most people come here to enjoy those same beaches, there is actually a lot more to it than that.
Maldives is a country populated with friendly locals who will make visitors feel at home; the country is not just a haven for water sports, it also has plenty of operators that provide facilities for water sports; the local cuisine is excellent and one can get fresh seafood just about anywhere; and finally there are a number of historical and cultural attractions waiting to be seen.
The Hukuru Miskiiy (also known as the Grand Friday Mosque) is probably the most well-known landmark in Maldives. Located in Male, the country’s capital, the mosque is the oldest in Maldives and was built in 1656. Although the exterior does not look very impressive, the inside of the mosque is beautifully decorated with intricate woodcarvings and lacquer work. Non-Muslims planning on visiting here should get permission in advance.
The National Museum is another popular attraction located in the capital. The museum is housed inside the only structure of the sultan’s palace that is still standing. The building contains quite a few treasures and is an interesting place to visit. One should also try to visit Sultan’s Park (which is the garden surrounding the museum) and the National Art Gallery.
There are very few attractions situated away from Male. Instead, the remote islands are the perfect spots to try out water sports. Things like scuba diving and snorkelling are considered ‘must dos’. One can also try out surfing, jet skiing, kayaking and parasailing.
Since the islands that make up Maldives are all scattered about, a conveniently located Maldives resort can be very useful. The Anantara Veli Maldives is situated on a private island but is only about thirty five minutes away from the international airport. They offer a variety of room styles including Maldives bungalows built right over the water. The resort has a terrific spa and facilities for a variety of water sports.
