Most notice Maldives for just its beaches and clear waters and fail to see the splendid culture and historical sites scattered across the islands that help make up this vibrant and dynamic country. One seeking to add a historical and cultural edge to their holiday in Maldives must definitely visit Male’s Hukuru Miskiy, also known as the Friday Mosque. Built in 1658 AD under the reign of Sultan Ibrahim Iskandar I, the mosque is an architectural masterpiece with its delicate and intricate carvings of coral stones and structures. Along with the beautiful lacquer work, the mosque in itself is a piece of prolific artistic excellence of the local artists, admired by all.
There have been many additions and renovations to the main building through time but it largely remains as it did in the beginning with the greatest addition to the complex being the coral stone minaret which was built in 1675 AD during the reign of Sultan Ibrahim Iskandhar. A minaret is the tall structure built adjoining a mosque and the minaret at the Hukuru Miskiy marks the beginning of the use of round minarets in the country. This creates an interesting contrast with other mosques and the pre-Islamic past of the country. This tall structure in itself is a unique piece of architecture with beautiful carvings made of coral stone. It was first renovated by Sultan Mohamed Shamsuddheen III in 1914 and unlike the main building which underwent numerous renovations from time to time, it remains largely unchanged.
It is not only the appearance that remains unchanged but the mosque still functions as a place of worship for the devotees as the religious and spiritual hub it was intended it to be. The mosque is surrounded by the 17th century burial grounds and the old headstones made of coral stone are also intricately decorated and well preserved and are a must visit when here. Hundreds of tourists cross its threshold to see the unique architecture of this heritage site of Maldives.
