One of the most popular types of dance and music is the Bodu Beru which began in the 19th century. This type of dance is only performed during festivals and special occasions. Percussion instruments and various types of drums are used; where the dancers move to their distinct rhythmic beats. The main lyrics are sung by a lead singer who is supported by a choir of ten to fifteen people. This dance form appeals to both young and old music lovers alike.
Enjoyed by a larger crowd is another unique type of Maldivian music popularly known as Thaara. Being of a religious atmosphere, it is performed only by men. Introduced in the seventeenth century by the Arabs, it is performed during national events. Most of these dance items also include an array of uniquely designed costumes along with other accessories that accompany the dance. One of such a dance type is the Dhandijehun, again, performed only by men. A “Dhandi”, which means a stick, is used during this show.
Performed by the women, the Bandiyaa Jehun is a type of salsa where they carry water pots and dance to vibrant rhythmic music. A fusion of modern and traditional music is used for this performance.
