One might think Male only features city hotels, buzzing streets and stunning ocean vistas, but there is much more to discover. When in the city make it a point to visit the National Museum and learn more about the rich heritage of the Maldives.
History of the National Museum
Inaugurated by the Prime Minister at the time, Mohamed Amin Didi, the National Museum was established on the Maldivian National Day, 11th November 1952. Featuring an impressive collection of historical artefacts that range from stone equipment to many other antiquities from the Buddhist era and the Islamic monarchy, the museum intends to preserve Maldivian history and imbue patriotism in the hearts of citizens.
Must-see Artefacts
The coral stone head of Lord Buddha discovered from Alifu Thoddoo, an engraved wooden plank from the 13th century and the Feyli Kolhu worn by a famous Sultan are among the many artefacts popular amongst history buffs and curious travellers.
Other Collections
Apart from the mentioned popular artefacts, the museum also features a diverse array of other exhibits including relics from the ancient pre-Islamic era, thrones, furniture, costumes, coins, ornaments, arms and armour. If you wish to experience something different while holidaying in a Maldives luxury resort including popular options such as COMO Cocoa Island, Maldives consider planning a trip to Male and visiting the National Museum.
The Mob Attack on the Museum
Due to a mob attack in 2012, many pre-Islamic artefacts were unfortunately destroyed. According to museum management, artefacts made from sandstone and coral were destroyed beyond repair. However, the museum was subsequently restored and today has many significant exhibits of historical value offering a unique experience for visitors.
