Diving in the Maldives is an incredible experience not to be missed. While there really isn’t a ”bad’ time during the year to go diving, read on to find out what you can expect from each season.
The Northeast Monsoon
Known as the Maldivian summer, the northeast monsoon starts from the month of December to April and is characterised by clear blue skies and calm seas, with the currents from the northeast running through atolls of the southwest.
Southwest Monsoon Season
The south west monsoon begins from the months of May to December with most diving expeditions being shifted to the western sides of the Maldivian atolls. Currents flowing through the southwest exit through the north east, with dive sites in the west boasting excellent visibility and cooler water temperatures.
Marine Life
While marine life is abundant in the Maldives throughout the year, if you wish to get up close to whale sharks and mantas, heading towards Hanifaru Bay during the southwest monsoon is best as they congregate there to feed on plankton, that has been built up during the southwest monsoon period.
