Restoring Coral in the Cocoa refers to replacing damaged areas and improving the protective coverage of the coral reefs around the island as well as, making new homes for the beautiful fish species which exist in this part of the Indian Ocean. The salinity tests have been done as well as the training, Como has also propagated the first few test frames and are trying these out in three predetermined locations around the Island to see how well they are going to grow. The frames will be individually tagged and monitored to make sure they are doing well by the Cocoa Island’s dive center team. The important aspect of this coral propagation project, is that the guests of the Como Hotel, can take part in this amazing project, by giving them a chance to be involved in helping to protect and understand the underwater environment which makes Cocoa Island such a special place to be. The Cocoa Island by Como is an exclusive, exquisite, unique and a breathtakingly beautiful hotel, which is located amidst the turquoise sea, and the white sandy beaches. The hotel has 33 overwater suites modeled after traditional dhoni boats, the gently-curving, wooden vessels used by local fishermen. Simple wooden walkways built above the shallow lagoon connect the suites to the hotel’s facilities. Each hotel room has their own private terrace that looks out to the turquoise ocean.
Guests at the hotel has the chance to sponsor a coral frame and help start the project off as well as be a part of it in the future. Guests will periodically receive the updates online where they can view photographs of their own coral frame as it grows into a part of the natural reef. Repeat guests and indeed all the divers who visit the Cocoa Islands, appreciate the beauty of the reefs here and are always enthusiastic to help preserve them by joining in with the Coco Island’s monthly House reef cleaning.
