Created in 1656, this marvel is considered one of the most outstanding examples of coral stone-based buildings in the world. It is so remarkable that it consistently appears as one of the Maldives best places to visit and was considered as a part of the UNESCO World Heritage cultural list in 2008.
Location:
The mosque is found in the city of Malé, opposite the Maldivian Presidential residence making it a popular attraction for visitors. Given the right attired is donned, an individual who is not of the Islamic faith may be permitted to enter its’ premises. Many tourists from even the neighbouring islands and hotels such as the Adaaran Resorts Maldives take the time to visit this grand mosque.
History:
This mosque was built during the rule of Ibrahim Iskandar to accommodate the ballooning number of devotees visiting the mosque for prayers. Widely regarded as the Maldives’ oldest mosque it has been in continuous use since the time of its construction.

The Grand Friday Mosque is renowned for the intricate etchings and inscriptions placed upon it in Quranic script.

Along with the mosque, you may see a surrounding graveyard where renowned Maldivians are laid to rest along with a unique minaret accompanying the main mosque building.
