The Maldives may be famed for its pristine beaches and island resorts, but it also has some fascinating monuments, especially in the capital, Male; here are a few of the best.
Grand Friday Mosque
The country’s largest mosque, this striking architectural landmark is one of the key places to see in Maldives. The Grand Friday Mosque is part of the Islamic Centre; apart from a magnificent golden dome, the site features a minaret while inside, one will find a woven carpet, wooden carvings and remarkable chandeliers.
Old Friday Mosque
From the largest mosque in the country to the oldest; the Hukuru Miskiy or Old Friday Mosque dates to the mid-17th century and has been constructed with materials like coral stone. A must-visit site on Male tours from nearby resorts including those belonging to Adaaran Maldives, this mosque is known for its ornate carvings, lacquer work and Quranic script that has been inscribed on the walls.
Mulee-aage Palace
Initially constructed for a sultan in the 20th century, Mulee’aage Palace is now the official residence of the country’s president and is an attraction one can admire from outside. It features colonial-style architecture with blue and white walls as well as an idyllic garden which makes it a charming place to photograph.
Tsunami Monument
Amongst the monuments in Maldives, the towering Tsunami Monument offers a poignant reminder of the tragic tsunami of 2004. The unique design of this structure has significance too; the steel spheres and pillars represent the atolls and the tsunami’s waves respectively, while the rods have the names of the victims carved on them.
