Maldives is often deemed as the embodiment of paradise and the best place for a holiday that will keep you blissfully secluded from the rest of the world. But one of the most magical experiences to be had while on holiday here is of course a dhoni ride.
What is a Dhoni?
The ‘dhoani’ or dhoni was used in ancient times for fishing but has now evolved with a better design making it usable to transport goods and passengers too. This traditional boat has triangular sails known as Latin ring sails. They are fixed at an angle to the mast so that it catches the wind to move forward.
The History of Dhonis
These traditional boats were once built with the raw materials that were available on the island which was coconut timbre. These boats were small and were only used by fishermen. But in the 19th century, Maldives also changed with industrialisation, and then dhonis were converted to a more modern vessel with a motor.
Dhoni Construction
The construction of dhonis takes place on a public island called Alifushi located in the Raa Atoll. The craft is thought to be highly esteemed and many youngsters sign up for apprenticeships to learn the art. Most resort islands the likes of Reethi Faru Resort have their own dhoni boats for guests to enjoy.
How to best enjoy the ride?
Dhoni boats are comfortably compact and perfect for a sunset cruise from Maldives water villa resorts. You can opt to take a trip for two or even go for a cruise with your family.
