Famed for its soft sandy beaches, magical sunsets and azure ocean waters, it is little wonder that the Maldives is one of the most popular coastal destinations in the world. Perfect for couples, families and independent travellers alike, the country provides countless hours of fun in the sun, sand and surf. However, there is much more to the Maldives that just its breathtaking coastal pleasures. The country also has a rich history and culture which can be experienced when visiting such attractions as the Mulee Aage.
Located in the capital, Male, Mulee Aage Palace currently serves as the office of the president of the country. Situated across from the famous Friday Mosque, this historic structure was once the residence of the Sultan and is one of the “must visit” attractions in the capital.
Going back to 1906, the Mulee Aage in Maldives was initially constructed by Sultan Mohamed Shamsuddeen III, for his son. However, after the Sultan was overthrown in 1936, this magnificent structure became a government property. It played a significant role during World War Two as it played host to the Ministry of Home Affairs, while its garden was used to cultivate vegetables and fruits, thereby providing a valuable source of nourishment during times of great food scarcity. In 1953, Mulee Aage became the official residence of the president and was subsequently given the new title of the “Presidential Palace”.
Queen Elizabeth II and former Indian Prime Minister, the late Rajiv Gandhi, are among the famous leaders who have stayed here. Those visiting Mulee Aage can witness fascinating colonial architecture and design styles along with intricate white carvings. You can also visit the scenic gardens at this site which offer a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of the streets.
Sultan Park and National Museum, the Friday Mosque and the Islamic Centre are among the close by attractions to Mulee Aage which are also worth visiting.
