An Enchanting Maldivian Getaway

Formerly known as Seenu Atoll, the Addu Atoll is considered to be one of the most ideal destinations for leisure travellers. Located at the southernmost part of Maldives, this heart-shaped atoll is home to Addu City. The city is comprised of inhabited areas such as Hithadhoo, Feydhoo, Maradhoo and Hulhudhoo. Besides these areas several uninhabited islands are also part of Addu Atoll.

Within the basin of the atoll is a natural anchorage, resulting in a vast natural harbour which is quite safe and suited for sea vessels. Being the main administrative and economic centre in this part of the country, this charming atoll is as equally important as the nation’s capital Male. Playing a leading role in the travel market of Maldives, the atoll has a unique culture and an interesting history. Having once had a matrilineal system of inheritance, there is an independent streak among the locals here!
The British bases which were established in Addu during the Second World War have left behind a big influence in its modern history. In 1956, a Royal Air Force base was set up here to be used as a Cold War outpost. A number of causeways connecting Hithadhoo, Maradhoo and Feydhoo islands were built by the British. The majority of the local population were employed here. However, when the British withdrew, they left behind some large industrial buildings, an airport, barracks and a good knowledge of English in the locals. 

Visitors to the atoll must make it a point to explore its great diversity of fauna including such marine species as dolphins and whales. Barrier reefs protect its islands from high waves of the Indian Ocean as well as storms. Its palm fringed beaches, marshy taro fields, wetlands and small lakes are all part of a captivating natural splendour that makes for a memorable holiday experience.
