Maldives, considered as one of the most beautiful places on the planet which offers a unique sensation of solitude, white sand, turquoise water and magnificent diving and snorkel sites has given much attention to tourism which is more environmentally friendly and ecologically sustainable. When the 2004 tsunami destroyed much of this lowest country in the world, experts claimed that is sea levels continue to rise, there is a possibility that Maldives could be under water by 2100. As a result the country has stepped up its eco-act, with many resorts such as Kuramathi Island Resort Maldives which encourage and practice Maldives Environmental Protection Policies.
Presently Maldivians are constructing a manmade island called Hulu Male, or New Male so that if the lowest-lying atolls do sink the population of those areas can reestablish their lives. Another major reason for encouraging Eco Friendly Tourism is that Tourism drives the Maldivian economy and therefore the Maldives government has implemented a tourism policy to stimulate the tourism industry as well as sustaining the fragile coral ecosystem Maldivian tourism depends upon. Eco Friendly Tourism is the fastest growing sub-sector within the Tourism Industry in Maldives. As the term “Eco Friendly” suggests, it is conscientious travel to natural areas which exploits natural resources without destroying the ecological equilibrium of an area and improves the well-being of the local people.
Eco Friendly Tourism is not only educational to the tourist but gives them a wonderful new experience of the gifts of nature, understanding the local culture and appreciate and respect other people’s beliefs without harming the environment. Eco Friendly Tourism brings the tourist closer to nature and opens mind to new ideas along with new perspectives on life. It is proved to be the best way to gain the tourist’s co-operation for the conservation of the Maldivian ecosystem.
