Planning a trip to the Maldives? You have probably dreamt of sinking your toes into perfect white sand and diving into crystal-clear waters. But before you pack your swimsuit (essential, obviously), it’s wise to consider the local weather. Don’t worry, it won’t rain on your parade (literally!) but understanding the climate will help you choose the perfect time for your dream getaway.
Weather in General: Basically, Summer All Year Round
The Maldives boasts a glorious tropical climate, with an average of eight hours of sunshine a day, best enjoyed during stays at private island resorts like OBLU SELECT Sangeli. Temperatures hover around a delightful 25 to 30°C throughout the year, dipping only slightly at night. Fancy a refreshing dip? The water stays at a comfortable 25°C or above, perfect for snorkelling or splashing around. While each atoll might have its own unique weather quirks, there are two main seasons to keep in mind.
Dry Season: Sunshine Central (November to April)
Sunshine worshippers, rejoice! The dry season, from November to April, is the peak tourist season for a reason. With minimal rain and plenty of divine sunshine throughout the day, this is the time to stay at a Maldives beach villa, perfect your tan and enjoy uninterrupted water sports and outdoor activities. However, this popular time sees high demand meaning accommodation and flights tend to be more expensive, but well worth it!
Wet Season: Occasional Showers (May to October)
Don’t let the term “wet season” scare you off! While May to October does see an increase in rainfall, it doesn’t translate to constant downpours that will keep you indoors throughout your holiday. The showers are usually brief, often clearing up quickly to reveal more sunshine for activities and adventures. Plus, the upside is undeniable – fewer visitors, lower rates, and amazing deals to boot.
The Best Times for Activities: Year-Round Fun
The good news is, that many activities in Maldives can be enjoyed during both seasons. The dry season, with its clear skies and calm waters, is generally the best time for water sports though not for all. For example, the wet season has better waves for surfing and stronger winds for windsurfing. Meanwhile, though diving is suitable all year round, you will be able to enjoy better visibility on the eastern side between November to April and the western side from May to October.
