The Maldive Islands have many attractions that never cease to amaze and continue to draw in visitors all year round. For those visitors interested in getting to know the island, its history, its journey to the present day and those who are interested in architecture and its many influences should definitely take time out to visit the Mulee Aagee Palace in Male.
Situated almost exactly opposite the Friday Mosque, the Mulee Aagee Palace was constructed in the year 1906 by Sultan Mohamed Shamsudeen III as a gift to his son. However during 1936, the Sultan and his son were overthrown in the Maldives’ bid for a Republican State and the Palace was declared Government property.
The gardens surrounding the edifice are breathtaking in their lush greenery and provide a charming sight to behold as well as a much needed green lung for the island. During World War II however the garden played a very important role by being a source of strength and stability to the people as it was used to grow vegetables to counter the scarcity during that time.
1953 heralded the Republic state of Maldives, at which point Mulee Aagee Palace was named the Official Residence of the President. It was only in 1986 that it was re-named the Presidential Palace. Today more than 100 years since its construction the Palace continues to be the landmark venue for Heads of State visits, official matters and national events.
The architecture is colonial in style and the stark white of the building contrasts well with the lush colour surrounding the Palace. Most of the raw materials needed for the construction were brought over from neighbouring Sri Lanka and India.
Those visitors looking to indulge themselves at any one of the Maldives island resorts will be spoiled for choice. Whichever Maldives resort you ultimately choose, be sure to read up well on the various sites available or hire a reliable government approved guide so as not to miss out on anything that the wonderful picturesque islands of Maldives have to offer.
