Ramadan- Maldives is an Islamic nation and thus, Ramadan is one of its biggest festivals. Ramadan is held on the ninth month of Islamic calendar which falls between the months of August or September. During this time, the fasting is practiced by the Muslims of Maldives during the day until Ifthar- aka break fast. Because of Ramadan offices and government workers end their working days earlier than usual. The same applies for restaurants and other consumer establishments as well, so you will have to bear this in mind when travelling there especially if you’re staying in a hotel in Malé. However, if you’re staying at an all inclusive Maldives resort the likes of the Kandolhu Island Maldives; there’s nothing to worry about as they won’t have any issue with serving food to guests.
The National Day- In the year 1573, the great ruler Mohammed Thakurufaanu gained victory by claiming the nation from clutches of the Portuguese colonists. Every year this great event in history is celebrated with much joy around Maldives and is called the National Day. The festival takes place on the first day of Rabee-ul Awwal, which is during the third month of the Islamic calendar. This is either during February or March. The National Day of Maldives is a wonderful opportunity to witness the culture of the nation, as there are wonderful parades and marches.Independence Day- This is not to be confused with The National Day. The Independence Day of Maldives is the day which Maldivians celebrate the victory of gaining freedom from the British colonists in 1965. Held annually on the 26th of July, the festival features many performances, parades and the best of all- food fiestas!
