Maldives is undoubtedly one of the most popular holiday spots in the world and that popularity is mainly due to its amazing beaches. However, it would be wrong to dismiss Maldives as just another beach destination. Filled with wonderful historical and cultural attractions, there is a lot more to Maldives than beaches, sunbathing and water sports. Tourists looking for something to do away from the surf can try taking a day trip to Male, the island’s capital, and home to many of its top tourist spots.
The Fish Market is a good place to start one’s exploration of Male. The market is open in the morning but only gets crowded a little later in the day. The market is where the locals come to purchase fresh fish, which is a staple of the local cuisine. From there one can head over to the National Museum. The museum, which was opened in 1952, is home to many national treasures. The main attractions here include a bust of the Buddha made out of coral stone and dating to the eleventh century and a thirteenth century plank from the Hukuru Miskiiy, that is filled with elaborate engravings.
The trip to the museum would take about two hours after which one can visit the Hukuru Miskiiy, also known as the Grand Friday Mosque. Established in 1656, it is the oldest mosque in the country and an interesting place to visit. Non-Muslims cannot enter without obtaining prior permission. After touring the mosque one can go over to the Mulee Aage, the official residence of the President. Top off the trip to the island’s capital by taking a walk along Male’s artificial beach. Strolling down the beach is a great way to unwind after a day of frantic sightseeing.
While Male does have the best attractions in the country, it does not have many good beaches. This is why many travellers prefer to stay in Maldives island resorts like the Naladhu Maldives. The Maldives hotel is situated on a private island and has an amazing beach. It also has excellent facilities for a variety of water sports, making it a terrific place to stay.
