The Maldives is known for its beautiful crystal blue waters with great visibility. This is why visiting the island paradise is a dream come true for divers. Here’s a bit of information on how to go about diving in Maldives.
Dives in Maldives
This is one of the most popular activities in Maldives. Drift dives are the most common form of dives in the Maldives. These are done while travelling on live boards where you allow the current to take you to your destination. You are sure to spot parrotfish, fusiliers, snappers, sweetlips, jacks and Napoleon wrasse.
Current Swept Channels
You will come across current swept channels where you will discover caves, overhangs and plenty of soft coral in vibrant colours. Invertebrates, sponges, and gorgonian fans are a few species that thrive in these nutrient rich waters of the channel. You will be able to observe cleaning stations as well where shrimps and cleaning wrasses service the larger fish of the sea.
Pinnacles
In the lagoons of the atolls, there are structures that rock that tend to sometimes protrude above the surface of the waters as well. Sessile life forms cling on to these bits of rock. The waters wash over the surface of the outer part of the rock as well allowing sponges and soft corals to survive. This also creates the ideal environment for shellfish and other small fish.
Things to know when planning
November to May is the perfect time to visit, but none the less, you could visit whenever you please and head out on your diving excursion. If you will be staying at a resort the likes of Atmosphere Kanifushi, you can inquire about the best dive sites around and how you can get a tour organized.
