While the Maldives is known for its secluded island getaways, the country has a rich culture and heritage worth experiencing on a tour of its capital, Male.
Old Friday Mosque
Known as the “Hukuru Miskiy”, this is the nation’s oldest mosque and its origins go back to 1656. Worth visiting on an excursion from your hotel in Maldives Island, this sacred site features intricate designs on the coral stone exterior and an old cemetery. With prior permission, you can head inside and see ornate woodcarvings and lacquer work too.
Fish Market & Local Market
The Fish Market is a must visit and is often included on Male guided tours offered by resorts the likes of Adaaran Select Hudhuranfushi. You can witness local fishermen bring in their catch at the nearby harbour, which is then sold at this lively market. Close by is the Local Market where one will find all manner of fresh produce and local sweets.
The National Museum
One of the premier attractions in Maldives, the National Museum is spread across two buildings, the older of which occupies what remains of the Sultan’s Palace. The museum showcases diverse exhibits be it items used by the Sultans, royal costumes, old weapons or artefacts from the pre-Islamic period.
The Islamic Centre
The Islamic Centre in Male is where you will find the remarkable Grand Friday Mosque. The largest mosque in the Maldives, this holy site built from white marble has a striking golden dome and towering minaret. Inside, one will find impressive features including ornate woodcarvings and striking chandeliers.
