With global warming taking a massive toll on the environment, countries like Maldives are doing their best to improve the depleting conditions of the environment which are causing a devastating impact on the reefs that surround these serene islands. Maldives in particular is one such country that heavily depends on the reefs for its livelihood – which forms as their main source of food as well as tourism. Resorts in Maldives, also rely on their lively colourful reefs that are home to an abundant variety of sea creatures to bring in tourists to their property, giving them a great chance of snorkelling with the exotic marine life. It is known that if the effects of global warming aren’t curbed by a large amount, the islands of Maldives could soon disappear.
That being stated, some hotels and resorts such as PER AQUUM Niyama Maldives have created programs which allows tourists and guests to adopt a coral. Corals are formed and grown in a nursery before being introduced to the sea, where they will be planted by their adoptee parent. The corals are usually fixed on to blocks of cement which will act as a strong base during its growth. Following the placement, the coral will continue to grow and flourish and act as a home to fish and other marine species. Guests are then encouraged to pick out their coral and give it a name. Part of the adoption process would include donating funds that will aid in the care and regeneration process of the corals. Guests who have adopted a coral will be given certificates of the adoption along with photographs of the coral’s flourishing and successful growth!
Adopting a coral in the Maldives is a great way to not only create awareness amongst others, but to also help in rebuilding the eco system that protects the islands from sinking in to the depths of the azure waters.
