Part of the fun of visiting a new destination is to go on a culinary adventure for which the Maldives is perfect! These are some dishes worth trying when here.
Fish Dishes
It’s no surprise that in a nation full of islands, fish is a staple and features in countless dishes. Tuna is very popular (be it frigate, skipjack or yellowfin tuna) and is used for curries, a savoury pastry called bajiya, a broth known as garudhiya and more. At resorts like The Nautilus Maldives, you can enjoy fish dishes and other seafood delights too.
Various Curries
If you’ve worked up an appetitive after your many adventures, try some yummy local curries with rice when dining at a Maldives restaurant! Mas riha is a curry consisting of fresh tuna, chillies, coconut milk and spices, while kukulhu riha is similar but made with chicken instead. You get plenty of veggie curries too which you should sample.
Mas Huni
While many people may begin their day with cereal or oats, in the Maldives, mas huni is the king of breakfast meals! Some describe it as a kind of tuna salad; it features fresh tuna that’s shredded and mixed with chillies, grated coconut, onions and lemon or lime. It’s best enjoyed with a flatbread called roshi and hot tea.
Short Eats
Shorts eats is the term for snacks or as the locals call it, “hedhikaa”. These various snacks are usually served at local cafes and eateries and include gulha (a deep-fried ball of pastry stuffed with tuna), bis keemiya (a pastry with tuna) and kulhi boakibaa (spicy fish cakes). You also get sweet snacks such as rice pudding.
