While the Maldives is perfect to enjoy sun-soaked bliss on pristine shores, active travellers can look forward to plenty of things to do as well; here are some of the highlights.
Snorkelling & Diving
Interestingly, the best places to visit in Maldives are often found beneath the waves! Destinations such as the Gaafu Alifu Atoll have thriving reefs which can be explored when snorkelling and diving with fish, manta rays, turtles and sharks to be encountered as well. Ideally, stay at a resort that has a nearby house reef and a PADI 5-Star Dive Centre and features night snorkelling and diving too.
Enjoying a Sunset Dolphin Cruise
Apart from underwater adventures, some resorts the likes of The Residence Maldives also provide sunset dolphin cruises, perfect to experience with the whole family or that special someone. You can even enjoy a glass of bubbly as you take in a spellbinding sunset and watch playful bottlenose and spinner dolphins frolicking in the waves and swimming wild and free.
Trying Bottom-Line Fishing
While you can go deep-sea fishing here, for something different, try bottom-line fishing using the traditional local technique. Some resorts provide a truly authentic experience by taking you out to sea at sunset on a local boat called a dhoni. You can cast your line and hook just as the locals do and wait patiently for that tug on the line; best of all, your catch can be prepared for a delectable dinner too!
Taking a Maldivian Cooking Class
Some resorts will offer the enriching experience of providing a hands-on guide to preparing Maldivian culinary favourites and the aromatic spices to be used. Certain properties even have their own vegetable garden where you can learn more about the ingredients; after all your hard work, you can look forward to delectable lunch and will also know how to whip up some of these dishes once back home.
