The world we live in, still has the ability to surprise us. Despite the marvels of modern technology there is nothing quite like seeing the spectacular natural phenomena of Mother Nature, which have the potential to leave you breathless or filled with awe at the very least! This is none more so true than when exploring the vast reaches of the world beneath the waves where vibrant colour and ghostly forms create a surreal landscape that no amount of computer generated graphics would be able to recreate on the big screen. When it comes to underwater adventures there are fewer places better than the Maldives which has a plethora of sites worth exploring; case in point, Banana Reef.
One of the first reefs to be discovered for diving, Banana Reef can be found in the North Male Atoll and provides a great introduction into the rich bounty of these waters. Ideally look to stay at Maldives island resorts in the North Male Atoll and one which offers diving excursions. Adaaran Select Hudhuranfushi is a good option in this regard.
So what can you expect on a visit to Banana Reef? Named after its curious formation which resembles a banana, this well known site has a depth range from between 5 to 30 metres and can be accessed the whole year round. Ideal for even novice divers, the site is rich in coral and marine life and the fascinating overhangs and caves lend to the charm of the underwater terrain you can explore.
The north eastern part of Banana Reef is a particularly good spot for diving; as you enter the waters here the sight of monolithic caves, impressive overhangs and striking rock faces will greet you along with the vast array of vibrant marine life that call these waters home. On your excursions you have a more than good chance to see black snapper fish, barracudas, grey reef sharks, bannerfish, grouper fish, pufferfish and morays. It is a dive site that can be explored more than once, with each new dive providing something new to discover.
