While the Maldives is the ultimate tropical paradise, it also has a fascinating culture that is worth knowing about and experiencing.
Gaining Insights
A great place to learn about local culture is the Maldives Discovery Centre which you will find on an Emboodhoo Lagoon area guide; located at CROSSROADS, a fully integrated leisure destination close to Hard Rock Hotel Maldives, it features an interactive exhibition covering history, arts & crafts, local way of life, marine biodiversity and more.
Religion
Initially a predominantly Buddhist nation, the Maldives converted to Islam in the 12th century which to this day is the main religion, intrinsically linked with the culture. Laws forbid bringing alcohol or pork products to the country, while conservative attire is expected on local islands; that said, these regulations don’t apply to private island resorts.
Music & Dance
A traditional form of music, Boduberu is an enthralling aspect of local culture; introduced in the 11th century, it’s influenced by African music and is known for its drummers who provide the rhythm and beat for dancers and singers. Today resorts even incorporate Boduberu drummers as part of cultural performances and wedding ceremonies.
Local Cuisine
Maldivian cuisine has been influenced by nearby nations like India and Sri Lanka as well as the Far East, Arabia and Africa due to trade. Typical local dishes are spicy and key ingredients include fish, coconut and starches; foodie favourites include mas huni (made with tuna), garudhiya (fish soup) and saagu bondibai (sago pudding).
