Amongst the key local events in Maldives, Victory Day is when people remember the time when an attempted coup was defeated in the country’s capital.
When and Where
Victory Day is held annually and takes place on the 3rd of November. This day is a public holiday and many of the key events associated with it can be seen in the capital Male, one of the most popular places to see in Maldives; look to plan a visit here even on other months too!
What to Expect
The official events of this day take place in Male which can be easily visited on tours organised by Maldives island resorts the likes of Adaaran Prestige Vadoo. During Victory Day, one will be able to witness parades and marches by the armed forces and a flag hoisting ceremony as well as hear national leaders give speeches.
The Background
This special day commemorates an incident in November 1988 when there was an attempted coup in Male to overthrow President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom. The coup which was led by a local businessman with the help of mercenaries was thwarted thanks to the swift assistance by Indian armed forces.
A Time to Remember
While this day is a celebration of this victory, it’s also a time to remember those who lost their lives during the coup; this includes 11 civilians, two of whom were executed and thus is a time to reflect on the innocent causalities of this treacherous plot.
