Made up of 1,190 islands, the Maldives is well known for its pristine beaches, magical sunsets, exciting water sports, exotic marine life and a paradise like setting which is ideal for couples and families alike. The country also boasts a rich and diverse culture which is evident in such aspects as local crafts, dance and food.
The Maldives was part of an important trade route dating back to the 2nd century A.D when Arab traders stopped over on their way to the Far East. Traders and settlers from India and Africa also frequented the islands and influenced the local way of life through their customs, traditions and beliefs. A significant event that also helped shape Maldives culture took place in 1153, when the country converted to Islam.
This multicultural aspect of Maldivian culture can be seen in the local music and one such example is the drum beats played on the instrument known as ‘bodu-beru’ which is similar to that of African drumming. During these musical performances it is common to see traditional dances which include ‘Thaara’ and ‘Bandiyaa’, carried out by men and women dancers respectively.
The country also has varied arts and crafts traditions and one can view intricate craftsmanship influenced by Southeast Asian design when visiting local mosques, some of which also showcase exquisite calligraphy of verses from the Holy Quran. Other local handicrafts include wooden lacquer ware called ‘Liye Laajehun’ which can be seen in intricately designed ornaments and boxes and ornate reed mats known as ‘Thundu Kunaa’. Influenced by designs from Arabian dows, the ‘dhoni is a traditional Maldivian sailboat and is also a fascinating feature of the country’s traditions.
Another important cultural aspect of the Maldives is its cuisine which was influenced by Sri Lankan and Indian dishes. Seafood in many forms is popular amongst locals, while rice and curry and tuna soup also form part of the staple diet.
