While the Maldives is famed for being a tropical paradise, this island nation also has a rich heritage which can be experienced at sites like the Old Friday Mosque.
Getting There
This ancient mosque can be found in the capital Male near Muliaage which is the president’s official residence. Island resorts the likes of Adaaran Prestige Vadoo do offer excursions to Male so you can easily visit such sites while also enjoying plenty of beachside relaxation!
A Bit of History
Locally known as “Hukuru Miskiy”, the Old Friday Mosque is the oldest mosque in Maldives and dates back to the 1600s. It was constructed during Ibrahim Iskandar’s reign and was in fact, built on the foundations of a temple.
Fascinating Exterior
One of the key highlights of the mosque is its exterior which has been made using coral stone; suffice to say the appearance is quite a contrast to the modern design of Maldives five star hotels or resorts you will stay at! Beside the mosque is a distinctive blue and white squat minaret also made from coral stones as well as a cemetery with ancient tombstones.
Inside the Mosque
Within the Old Friday Mosque is more exquisite craftsmanship including fine woodcarvings and lacquer work. Amongst the highlights are carvings of Quranic verse and a panel that dates back to the 13th century which commemorates Islam being introduced to the Maldives.
