The Maldives comprises 26 natural coral atolls in the Indian Ocean expanding over an area of about 750km. The atolls are made up of 1,192 coral islands of which 200 are currently inhabited. The islands are broadly divided into various industries and agriculture, while a few of the atolls are selectively used for resorts.
Lhaviyani Atoll
It comprises 54 different islands and is designated as the administrative division of the Maldives. It is located in the northern region and is accessible from the Male airport via a 30-minute Seaplane flight. Five of the atolls are inhabited and quite a number are luxury resorts such as Atmosphere Kanifushi, which offer all-inclusive resort experiences for those staying at their luxury villas. Maldives is known for scuba diving and water sports and the Lhaviyani Atoll offers some of the best spots to experience recreational water sports.
Gnaviyani Atoll
Gnaviyani Atoll is the smallest administrative division of the Maldives. It has two freshwater lakes and quite a few fields that have fruits and vegetables as well as tropical woodlands, wetlands and sandy beaches making it one of the most geographically unique islands. This atoll has a number of smaller mini-hotels and guest houses that make it a more affordable region for accommodation.
Dhaalu Atoll
Consisting of 56 islands, this atoll is accessible via domestic flights as well as local ferry services that connect it to the other islands of the Maldives. There are several old Buddhist and Islamic religious sites to view as well as the Kudahuvadhoo Old Friday Mosque, which is still in use today. This atoll is home to many luxury holiday resorts.
Raa Atoll
This popular destination, consisting of 88 islands, is accessible via a 45-minute seaplane flight from Male. Activities such as diving, snorkelling and dolphin cruises are very popular in this area. You can also hop from one island to another to enjoy some deserted beaches. The resorts here are known for their luxurious offerings such as ocean suites and beach villas.
