The Hukuru Miskiiy or the Grand Friday Mosque is a fascinating monument which makes it an essential stop when taking in the sights of the capital city of the Maldives.
History
Originally constructed in 1658 under the patronage of Sultan Ibrahim Iskandar over a two- year period, the Grand Friday Mosque or otherwise known as Hukuru Miskiy is a must visit attraction in the archipelago. Built with coral stone, the walls feature intricately carved Arabic calligraphy and other ornamental designs.
Things to See
Visitors can take in the expertly done lacquer work and beautiful woodwork that adorn the interior of the mosque. Other points of interest are the blue and white Munnaaru, the drum-shaped minaret that was built in 1675, and the cemetery housing ancient tombstones erected in memory of past rulers and heroes of the country.
Location
The ancient mosque is located in Malé, on the Kaafu Atoll and is an 8-minute walk from the Hulumale Ferry Terminal. If one is interested in visiting the site, many a Maldives beach resort including the likes of Grand Park Kodhipparu will be happy to arrange it.
Tips
Do dress appropriately covering one’s shoulders, arms and legs as it’s a place of worship. Entrance is free and visiting in the morning hours before the afternoon prayers take place is well recommended.
