The Maldives Islands are currently one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world and boast insurmountable geographical beauty, limitless luxury, and a remarkable history.
Early History
One of the first known inhabitants of the Maldives are the Giravaaru Tribe who have been on the island as far back as 1500 BC, with settlers also stemming from neighbouring nations such as Sri Lanka and ancient Tamilakam. The Giravaaru people are now mostly in the capital island of Malé, while Giravaaru Island features one of many Maldives luxury resorts.
Rise of Islam
The story of how Islam gained prominence in the Maldives involves an ocean-dwelling demon called “Rannamaari” who rose once a month, demanding a virgin-sacrifice. A travelling Islamic scholar eventually defeated him by reciting from the Quran.
Maldivian Heroes
There were many heroes during the time of Portuguese colonisation, but one name that still inspires Maldivians is Muhammad Thakurufaanu. He, along with his two brothers, led a long guerrilla campaign against the Portuguese invaders and eventually defeated them. He later became Sultan and ushered a new era of prosperity for the Maldives. His historic residence is a major attraction, and many resorts such as Baros Maldives organise excursions to it.
British Rule
In 1887, the Sultan of the Maldives made an agreement with the British Governor of Ceylon to turn the Maldives into a British protectorate where the Maldives are given military protection and control over local administration for annual tribute. This lasted till 1965 when the Maldives regained independence.
