There’s more to the Maldives than sublime beaches and island getaways; here are some facts you may not know about this country that never ceases to amaze.
26 Coral Atolls
The country is made up of 26 atolls and spread out across them are approximately 1,190 islands! Each of the atolls offers something different to experience; some of the best resorts in Maldives can be found in the North Male Atoll which is easy to reach from the airport and offers access to stunning dive sites and wrecks.
Over 1,000 Fish Species
If you thought the number of islands was impressive, wait till you see the huge array of fish! The best way to encounter some of the over 1,000 species is to go diving or snorkelling at resorts like Grand Park Kodhipparu, Maldives. Apart from reef fish, the country is home to manta rays, turtles, dolphins and more.
Smallest Country in Asia
While it may have over 1,000 islands, the Maldives is Asia’s smallest independent state. Though it may be relatively small, the experiences it has to offer are diverse and amazing! Another fascinating fact is that it’s also the smallest Muslim nation in the world and has a rich culture and traditions linked with Islam.
Underwater Cabinet Meeting
Not many destinations can claim to have held an underwater meeting; not only can the Maldives do so, but it was the first to host a cabinet meeting under the waves too! This extraordinary cabinet session in 2009 put the spotlight on the threats of global warming which affects the country’s low-lying islands.
