If you’re planning an island vacation to the Maldives, you’ve probably already done your research on some of the more popular things to do on the islands. Fishing in Maldives is one of the more popular activities. Although it is also a tourist attraction, fishing is also one of the main means of livelihood for the local people, where fish takes up more than 80% of their daily diet. As this is one of their major attractions, it should be known that as some resorts such as Adaaran Club Rannalhi rely on the rich life of these waters, fishing may not always be allowed on your island. As a means of protecting the house reefs around the resorts, fishing on the reef is definitely not permitted as this would ruin the marine life and eventually destroy the diverse range of sea creatures living here.
The Maldives makes up a group of 26 atolls, and is known to be the smallest and lowest country in the world. Surrounded by an abundant amount of marine life, it will come as no surprise that the fishing here is quite famous amongst tourists. Marine life makes up for being the largest tourist attractions for the islands, as the crystal clear, azure waters are ideal for snorkelling and diving, where tourists can explore a diverse range of colourful and exotic marine life, from sea turtles, whales, sharks, rays, and shoals of fish living in the colourful reefs.
However, if you do want to go on a fishing tour, check with your hotel if a fishing expedition can be arranged which will allow you to enjoy some deep sea fishing. Some of the popular catches of the day include groupers, emperors, barracuda, squirrel fish, rainbow runners and tuna. Although do keep in mind that hunting whales, dolphins and other similar marine life is strictly against the law.
