When it comes to sea turtles there are a total of seven species to be found in the world. Unfortunately, all seven of these species are categorised as endangered. The Maldives islands, popular for the varieties of luxury resort, Maldives has to offer such as PER AQUUM Huvafen Fushi Maldives, is home to a total of five of the seven varieties of the incredible sea turtles. Thankfully, there are many conservation schemes in play by various establishments to ensure the longevity of these incredible species of creatures.
There are a few ways that sea turtle conservation is carried out and one of the most common methods is through assisted rearing. This can happen in naturalised or almost institutionalised manners, but the common denominator is that the protection of turtle nests. If a nest of turtle eggs are discovered, they are effectively placed in protective care and are thoroughly monitored till the hatchlings emerge. Once the eggs have hatched, the infant turtles are monitored for a short period to ensure their health before being released into the ocean under cover of darkness in places that are known to not contain predators.
The conservation facilities have many means in play in order to identify and consistently monitor their turtles. The sea turtle Photo Identification & Monitoring Project possess records of more than two thousand turtles, mainly Hawksbill and Green-Turtles since those two are the most common species to be found on the Maldives islands. Much like our human finger-prints, the patterns on each Turtle’s face are unique, and are used to effectively identify them.
Another way sea-turtles are monitored is by tagging, and then tracking their whereabouts using satellite-assisted technology. Some of the turtles studied and monitored by conservationists in the Maldives travel as far as Oman in the Middle-East in order to nest.
The efforts of the sea-turtle conservationists are integral to the survival of the sea-turtles and if you find yourself in the Maldives, be sure to visit a facility to witness their hard-work in action.
