The Maldivians believe that several hundred years ago an Evil spirit larked in the borders of the island that appeared every night out of the depths of the ocean. The Spirit created much unrest in the island and took many a lives of women. The Traveller from Persia, Abdul Barakat Yusuf noticed this and one night visited the sacrificial temple to encounter this spirit. He stayed there all night reciting verses from the Holy Quran and was not harmed one bit. The surprised locals referred him to the King who, inspired by this act converted to Islam at that instance and the whole nation followed suit. This occurred in the year 1153 and to this day the Maldives stands as a 100% Muslim population.
