For those who have not tried it, deep sea fishing in Maldives may not seem like an exciting water sport, but how wrong they are! Here are some insights into this thrilling activity.
Morning Fishing
The morning is perfect for a fishing trip in Maldives to catch big game fish. Depending on the resort or tour operator, you can use different fishing techniques; dogtooth tuna, sailfish, dorado and marlin can be caught with the “trolling” method, while “jigging” and “popping” are ideal for barracuda and giant trevally.
Sunset / Night Fishing
Once the sun begins to set, you can embark on a truly captivating fishing expedition; some resorts like Adaaran Select Meedhupparu, feature night fishing where you can head out on a boat known as a “dhoni”. Using traditional fishing methods you can not only catch various fish but have them prepared for dinner the following day!
The Preferred Season
For big game fishing, including tuna and wahoo, November to March is generally the best season as the weather conditions are optimal. That said, you can enjoy this activity during other times too, though you need to be mindful of monsoonal rains; also keep in mind that sailfish can be caught as early as August.
Local Regulations
Remember there are strict regulations when it comes to fishing, though if you are staying at a reputed resort they will keep to the guidelines. In general, in marine reserves, reef fishing is not allowed, while nets cannot be used to snare mackerel and it’s prohibited to kill any shark species.
