Home to a wide range of endemic and migratory species, Sri Lanka is a bird watching hotspot that attracts both local and foreign enthusiasts. In light of this rich avifauna, the Field Ornithology Group of Sri Lanka has named December as the National Bird Watching Month since it is during this period that many endemics as well as migratory birds can be seen.
Sri Lanka has over 400 bird species which can be viewed at many of the island’s nature reserves and sanctuaries. These include the Bodhinagala Sanctuary, Kumana National Park and the Kalametiya Bird Sanctuary. Also of note is the Udawatta Kele Sanctuary in the hill capital, Kandy where one can see birds such as the Sri Lanka Myna, Emerald Dove and Red-faced Malkoha. Bird watching enthusiasts wanting to explore Udawatta Kele Sanctuary can enlist the services of Cvisit to organise a stay at Kandy hotels in the region.
