An activity for the whole family, snorkelling can be particularly enjoyed in destinations such as the Maldives that has a rich marine biodiversity. Here’s what to expect.
Where to Snorkel
When it comes to snorkelling in Maldives, you can try it just about anywhere in the ocean! That said, private island resorts the likes of Heritance Aarah that offer this activity make an ideal choice and provide easy access to reefs. An alternative would be a liveaboard boat that will take you to snorkelling hotspots.
The Best Period
While you can enjoy this activity almost the whole year through, January to April is exceptionally good and the waters are at their clearest. From May to September the arrival of rains can reduce visibility on your underwater adventures in Maldives; pool villa options are on offer however, so you can relax till the rain ceases before heading back out!
Marine Marvels
What makes this water sport in Maldives so popular is the chance to get up close to all manner of marine species. You may encounter giant squirrelfish, soldierfish, bannerfish, sharks, turtles, rays and triggerfish. You may also come across clownfish and palette surgeonfish which the kids may recognise as “Nemo” and “Dory” respectively!
Colourful Coral
Adding some vibrant hues to the underwater world are the many types of corals in the Maldives that you can truly appreciate while snorkelling. From hard corals such as staghorn, brain and table coral to soft corals including leather coral, these living organisms are very much a part of the wonders of the deep.
