Maldives is situated in the Laccadive Sea, between the Chagos Archipelago and Mincoy Island. Arranged in a double chain of twenty six coral atolls the islands were formed many years ago as coral grew over volcanoes. The volcanoes would later recede leaving only coral and making the Maldives islands a unique geological formation. The country is a world renowned beach destination known for its warm, blue waters and soft, white sands, where one can try out an array of adventure water sports from scuba diving and snorkelling to jet skiing and kite surfing. As a shopping destination it is not as well-known but one can still find several good markets, especially in Malé, the island’s capital.
Malé is the commercial capital and is the place where one can get all kinds of imported goods, be it clothes or electronics. The two most popular markets are the Fish Market and the Local Market. As its name suggests the Fish Market is the best place to get fresh seafood and many restaurants and households start the day here. The Local Market is located nearby and is always a frenzy of activity. Here one can get groceries such as fresh fruits and vegetables, along with other household goods.
Tourists looking for good souvenirs can try Majeedhee Magu. Situated along the main road, the Majeedhee Magu is filled with shops selling goods ranging from clothes and books to antiques and electronics. Most of the shops here are open until 11 in the night. Another popular place to try is the Chaandanee Magu. Although shops in the area mainly sell imported goods one can also find high quality local handicrafts on sale here. When shopping for souvenirs tourists should note that the export of coral, turtle shell products and oyster shell products are strictly forbidden.
Although Malé is the home of many of the nation’s cultural, historical and shopping destinations it does not have many good beaches. Tourists who want a Maldives Island resort next to a good beach while still being able to enjoy the cultural treasures of Malé can try staying at the Adaaran Prestige Vadoo. The Maldives resort is situated on a private island blessed with a gorgeous beach and is yet only minutes away from the capital by speedboat.
