Ramadan
A key event, Ramadan takes place during the ninth month of the Islamic calendar when Muslims engage in fasting, praying and doing acts of charity. While public offices close early during this period, it’s a great time to stay at a Maldives luxury resort, some of which serve food associated with breaking the daily fast.
Eid-Ul Fitr
The end of the month of Ramadan is celebrated on Eid-ul Fitr which marks the beginning of the month of Shawwal. On this day, Muslims listen to sermons, pray at mosques and spend time with family. It’s also known for its festive meals and you can enjoy getaways during this time at resorts like Finolhu Baa Atoll Maldives.
Independence Day
Every 26th July, the Maldives celebrates its Independence Day; it marks the day when in 1965, the country gained total independence from the British. A public holiday, this special occasion is usually a time one can witness military parades and performances by school children in colourful costumes in the capital, Male.
National Day
In the Maldives, National Day commemorates the time when local forces led by Muhammad Thakurufaanu defeated and expelled the Portuguese in 1573 after a 15-year long struggle. It’s held on the first day of the Islamic calendar’s third month and features flag-raising ceremonies and military parades around the country.
