Surfing is not normally the first thing that comes to anyone’s mind when they think of the Maldives, but this tropical paradise in the middle of the Indian Ocean, does offer quite a few seasonal surf breaks that draws in the adventurous surfer. Set away from the typical places to see in Maldives, like the crystal clear lagoons and stunning private resorts, such as the luxurious Adaaran Prestige Vadoo, known for its water pavillions, are reef breaks of various sizes, perfectly suited for intermediate to advanced surfers.
The waves off the coast of Maldives aren’t as powerful as those found in areas like Bali or Australia, as the regular swells here measures to around shoulder high; however, you will get plenty of barrels and longer waves to enjoy. The surfing season in the Maldives depends on the Atolls and the two monsoon seasons that affect the seas, the North-East and South-West monsoons.
Between March and November are the peak months to catch waves, but wave sizes can vary throughout the region during these months. Unlike the typical waves found elsewhere, the waves in Maldives are created when they break over dead reefs. You’ll rarely feel the difference unless you come across low tides. There are several great surfing spots around the atolls, but very few are easily reachable from the resorts.
The Southern Atolls offer the best surf breaks, but they are also the most remote and only accessible by boat. Due to political reasons, a permit is required by any boats to travel in the area. However, the feeling of wonder and discovery on these boat trips are worth it, as you get the chance to surf with no one else around. The best way to experience the Maldivian surf breaks and waves, is to charter a boat from a knowledgeable tour operator who would know the best spots to take you.
