Are you a fan of water sports? Maldives is then the ideal holiday destination for you. With its cluster of things to do ranging from paddle boarding to snorkeling to surfing, there is something or everyone here. Out of all the water activities available on the islands, surfing is one with an interesting origin story.
The story begins in 1973 when two surfers from Australia get shipwrecked on their way from Sri Lanka. Being washed ashore Male, they tried in vain to rebuild their boat to go back. As each attempt left them more tired than before, they found distraction in the waves that were breaking across the Northern atolls. Tony, one of the two, ended up becoming a citizen of Maldives and kept the optimal surfing conditions a secret for 15 long years until increasing tourism compelled him to let the cat out of the bag. Since then, Maldives has become a favourite spot for surfing for enthusiasts across the world.
Surfing conditions are optimal in Northern, Central, and Southern atolls while South West area where Kandolhu Island Maldives is located are better for windsurfing and water boarding. The Northern and Central atolls have best breaks between March and October, with about 15 breaks in each cluster. The conditions are ideal for the intermediate level surfer. The Southern atolls with its 23 breaks are at their best in March and April. The sea is rougher here and is recommended for advanced surfers only. You could either have a boat from your resort take you to good break points or sign up for a surf charter that operates in the Maldivian waters. As this is a seasonal activity, you most likely will have to seek guidance from third party sources. It is best to bring all your equipment, though remember that transfer from airport to the hotel will be on a speed boat.
