While there are many attractions in Maldives above the water, there is just as much to see below as well! Home to a rich array of marine life, this underwater world provides plenty to discover.
Coral Species
Did you know corals (the polyps namely) are in fact, living organisms! The outer limestone skeleton helps to create reefs and varieties like brain, cup, carnation, tree and staghorn corals can be seen. Some eco-resorts in Maldives such as Reethi Faru Resort are even involved in coral restoration by creating artificial reefs.
Diverse Fish Species
With more than 1,000 species of fish found here, there’s always a reason to leave the comfort of your Maldives overwater villa and engage in some snorkelling! Keep on the lookout for you may spot angelfish, parrotfish, sweetlip emperors, clownfish, cardinalfish and powder blue tang to name but a few!
Mantas and Sharks
It’s quite a thrill to spot these magnificent marine species while snorkelling or diving in Maldives. While mantas can be seen in their hundreds during certain periods, not to be missed is the chance to spot shark species too; these include whitetip, great hammerhead and grey reef sharks.
Sea Turtles
Another creature that’s a part of the local marine life is the sea turtle. There are, in fact, seven sea turtle species in the world, five of which can be seen here; hawksbill and green sea turtles are the most commonly spotted, while the other three are the olive ridley, leatherback and loggerhead turtles.
