Old Friday Mosque
The Old Friday Mosque which dates to 1656 is one of the most famed attractions in Maldives. The country’s oldest mosque, it features traditional architecture and is made from coral stone which was used at the time. This sacred site is well-known for its intricate carvings on the walls, lacquerwork, decorated ceiling and beautiful woodcarvings that help create a truly unique place of worship.
Historical Minaret & Graveyard
Adjoining the Old Friday Mosque stands a historical, white and blue squat minaret, built in 1675 under the reign of Sultan Ibrahim Iskandar I. Interestingly, its design has been influenced by the ones at the entrance to Mecca. Nearby is a 17th-century cemetery with coral tombstones with intricate carvings as well as small mausoleums. Tomb of Muhammad Thakurufaanu

He subsequently ruled the country as a sultan and his tomb is a symbol of respect and gratitude for his bravery and leadership.
Medhu Ziyaaraiy Shrine
This is the shrine and tomb of the Moroccan scholar, Abu al-Barakat Yusuf al-Barbari, who is credited for introducing Islam to the Maldives in 1153. This tale is linked with a fascinating local legend which tells of how he helped the people get rid of a seam demon. Located near the Old Friday Mosque, this site is visited by locals and pilgrims looking to pay their respects and can be easily added to one’s itinerary.
