A unique part of enjoying holidays in the Maldives is to experience a flight on a seaplane be it on airport transfers or as part of an excursion; read on to find out more about such memorable experiences.
Seaplane Transfers
The Maldives features numerous island resorts some located in atolls far away from the main Velana International Airport near Male; seaplanes offer the easiest mode of transport to cover this vast distance quickly. The main operator of domestic seaplane flights in the country is Trans Maldivian Airways (TMA), while some properties have private seaplanes too.
Scenic Flights
While seaplane transfers are used to get to resorts, some properties that can be reached by speedboat like Adaaran Select HudhuranFushi, even provide special scenic flights. Amongst the most unforgettable experiences in the Maldives, excursions by seaplane provide amazing views of the islands, lagoons and gorgeous coastal settings from a unique perspective.
Making Bookings
When it comes to seaplane transfers, you don’t make the booking with the airline; instead, it’s done by the resort you will be staying at. Remember, that the cost for the transfer is usually not included in the room rate so check ahead. Private scenic flights on the other hand are organised by the resort so you can easily book them directly for an added cost.
Seaplane Schedules
Many of the local seaplanes don’t have a fixed schedule and the routes are planned daily; once the bookings have been made, the airline will inform the resort about the seaplane departure time usually a day before you arrive. Normally, seaplanes don’t fly after around 4:30pm so alternate arrangements will have to be made till the next day if arriving later.
