There will always be as many locals as foreigners in Utheemu as an ancestor that they are proud of hailed from this island. Utheemu which is tiny in size is massive in its options of gorgeous views and serenity.
History
The Sultan, Mohamed Thakurufaanu was raised in Utheemu and it was he who rewrote Maldivian history in the 16th century by freeing his country of invaders from Portugal. He is known to be a gallant and valiant son of Maldives who fought with the Portuguese for eight years with the help of his siblings and friends to regain independence for his country, which is why even the locals consider this one of the topmost islands to visit in Maldives.
The Palace
The official residence of the sultan Thakurufaanu is known as Utheemu Ganduvaru and it is well preserved to date. The small but charming structure functions as a museum and its interiors are mostly made of wood.
The North Shore
With minimal activity taking place in the seas towards the north of Utheemu, the beaches and ripples along the northern end are considered absolutely picturesque. People find the powdery white sand to be divine.
The Harbour
A new harbour has been commissioned in the islet making it possible for people from the south to access Utheemu with ease. Tourists at Adaaran Select Meedhupparu and those just arriving in Malè do day trips, but those who are further to the south find it difficult to do a day trip.
