Looking to add a bit of culture to your trip to the Maldives? Then a tour of the country’s capital, Male, is in order and when there, look to visit one of its main attractions, Sultan Park.
Getting There
Since Male is on its own island check to see if your Maldives resort offers excursions there; island resorts the likes of Kurumba Maldives provide tours to the country’s capital, making transport convenient. Since Male is relatively small, finding Sultan Park is not hard and it’s located across from the well known Islamic Centre.
A Bit of History
Sultan Park is situated on the grounds that were once part of the Royal Palace. In the 16th century the palace was demolished (barring one wing) and a section was set aside for the park which people can enjoy today.
Family Relaxation
The park is a great place to unwind or have a leisurely stroll amidst scenic greenery. Apart from the idyllic grounds, Sultan Park also features a glass tree-house, a towering water fountain and play corners for little ones which make it well suited for families.
The National Museum
Sultan Park is also home to the National Museum complex made up of two separate buildings one of which is housed in the remaining wing of what used to be the Sultan’s Palace. Both buildings offer fascinating insights into the country’s heritage and showcase everything from objects that belonged to the sultan to artefacts from the pre-Islamic period of the Maldives.
