Although the Maldives is a beach Mecca for the masses, the country’s traditional cuisine and its delicious local treats offer visitors another compelling reason to vacation in the islands.

Garudhiya
Considered a comfort food among locals, this humble and easy-to-prepare soups are often served at the start of every meal in most households across the Maldives. Requiring very few ingredients including curry leaves, onions, garlic and chilli, one element of the dish that cannot be substituted is the use of fresh tuna. Slow-cooked to gain the “umami” flavour that’s prevalent in Dashi or Miso soups, the broth is seasoned with lime juice before serving.
Bis Keemiya
Bis Keemiya is akin to a Chinese roll in appearance although the flavour is much closer to a well-baked curry puff. The filling will usually include cabbage, boiled eggs, and onions. Flaky and soft on the outside and chewy on the inside, the dish also resembles a Samosa in texture.
Fihunu Mas
Often served at Adaaran Select Meedhupparu and other resort restaurants, Fihunu Mas or Maldivian Grilled Fish is a mouth-watering dish that is served alongside carbs such as bread, rice, or roti. Foodies consider restaurants that serve Fihunu Mas some of the best places to visit in Maldives.
Boshi Mashuni
In addition to being a wholesome and nutritious meal, Boshi Mashuni, also known as banana flower salad, is known for its health benefits and crunchy texture. Uncooked and using only a handful of spices including turmeric and cumin to add flavour, this refreshing dish is a great pick-me-up for vegans.
Sago Pudding
Known for its cooling properties, Maldivians love to consume this sweet dish which is infused with sago seeds, coconut milk and condensed milk during special occasions such as weddings and other celebrations.
