For the surfers out there touring the world in search of the greatest swells, the Maldives is one of the archipelagos you are bound to visit sooner or later. It is one of the best places in the world to surf. Here’s what you need to know when planning your visit here.
Best time for a surfer’s visit
Well, even though most travellers would agree that the best time to visit is when sunshine is abundant, they aren’t wrong! But can the same be said for the surfers? In this case, slightly stormy weather is ideal in the Maldives bringing about the best swells from March to October.
The best swells
It is said that the best waves occur in June, July and August when the wind is offshore. With swells similar to that of Indonesia, the air is much cooler as well allowing you to enjoy it a little bit more. The best waves are usually found in areas over dead reefs. Therefore, there is less risk of coming into contact with them unless you are surfing during low tide.
The change in tides
The tides depend on the monsoons in the Maldives. The North-East monsoon sets the perfect conditions for surfing in the Southern atoll and occurs from March to April. During the South-West monsoon, the best conditions to surf would be in the northern or central atolls. This is from May to October.
Surf equipment
If you are worried about surfing equipment, the luxury Maldives resorts will allow you to rent a surfboard. If you are staying in an overwater villa by properties like Heritance Aarah, you have direct access to the ocean. Furthermore, surfing tours and classes are also readily available.
