Music plays a huge role in most cultures and the Maldives is no exception. Despite its relative isolation and small size, loud and iconic music is interwoven with Maldivian culture and tradition. The most notable of these is the ancient form of music called BoduBeru.
The Origins
BoduBeru’s roots can be traced all the way back to the 11th century. The style of music and dance involved in these traditional performances bear a striking resemblance to those seen in certain African songs and dances. This gives credence to the idea that sailors from Africa had an influence on the Maldives back during ancient times.
The Evolution
BoduBeru evolved among the common folk of the island, often being an alternative to court music which was reserved for nobles. People would often band together to perform the BoduBeru and it was an integral part of the Maldivian way of life.
The Performance
If you’re vacationing in the Maldives, things to do might seem endless but make sure to enjoy a BoduBeru performance before you leave! If you’re staying at a prominent resort – say, for example, the Finolhu Baa Atoll Maldives – just ask management where the nearest show is.
The Flavours of BoduBeru
Over the years, BoduBeru has become an important facet of Maldivian theatre, musical shows, and dance performances. Various songs are sung – from romantic ones to melancholic songs and even satirical works.
